Cancale

Oysters, harbour life and views across the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel.

Historical travel text: this page adapts an older Klein-Singen.de article.

Cancale is a small harbour town east of Saint-Malo with views across the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. For many visitors its name has become almost synonymous with oysters.

Oyster cultivation has shaped the town’s economy and identity. At low tide the extensive beds become visible in the bay, while the harbour front offers a direct connection between local food culture and the maritime landscape.

The older article also quoted a poetic image of Cancale sheltering at the foot of the coast like a giant bird protected from storms by cliffs and rocks.
