Statistical statements in everyday language
When people hear the word statistics, they often think first of tables, charts and scientific studies. Yet every day we use words that express frequencies and proportions: all, nobody, many, few, mostly or rarely.
Universal claims are easy to refute
Sentences such as “Nobody helps me” or “All unemployed people are lazy” are universal claims. A single counterexample is enough to refute them. Usually something weaker is actually meant, for example:
- “Too few people help me.”
- “Some unemployed people reject certain jobs.”
- “In this situation I have not received any help so far.”
Such formulations are more precise because they no longer claim to hold without exception for every person or every case.
Vague quantity terms
Words such as “many” and “few” are harder to refute, but they are also imprecise. Whether a share of 20 percent is already “a lot” depends on the context. For a rare side effect, 20 percent would be extraordinarily high; for voter turnout it would be very low.
Anyone who wants to persuade should therefore state concrete reference values whenever possible: How many cases were examined? What proportion is meant? What comparison group is being used?
Precision improves arguments
Before using words such as “all”, “none”, “everyone” and “nobody”, it is worth pausing briefly. Is the statement really meant without exception? If not, qualifications such as “some”, “often”, “in this sample” or “under these conditions” make the argument factually more robust.
